Having a rookie quarterback learning a new system and building a connection with his teammates can take a while to get things going on the field, but having a safety blanket tight end that you can depend on helps that process a ton.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels had that last season with veteran tight end Zach Ertz, who surprised everyone. Father Time did not affect one of the most productive tight ends of all time, and one coach says he can be even better this season, thanks to one trait that's been missing: his footwork.
Absolutely nobody expected Ertz to come in and finish second on the team in every major receiving category, but that's exactly what he did. Ertz made a ton of key plays last season, including an insane touchdown grab in the endzone against the Atlanta Falcons to send the Commanders to the playoffs. For everything that Ertz was great at, there was one thing he could improve at, and that was gaining more yards after the catch.
One coach for the Commanders told ESPN reporter John Keim that he believes we could see an improved yards after catch ability from Ertz this season
"Meanwhile, tight end Zach Ertz was, again, a reliable target over the middle -- one coach said his footwork is even better than last year, allowing for more yards after the catch. That was evident Wednesday." -John Keim, ESPN

Daniels and Ertz have shown that their connection is as strong as ever in training camp, and the two will be back to producing this season. Ertz adding more yards after the catch can elevate the offense even more, with him being such a go-to target for Daniels. Who knows what happens if he gets that first down against the Pittsburgh Steelers?
Ertz finished the season with an average of only three yards after the catch, which was 37th in the league, but he still finished sixth in receptions, 11th in receiving yards, and fourth in receiving touchdowns.
People thought Ertz was coming to the Commanders as a mentor and as a one-year rental, but he proved everyone wrong last season as a top target for a Commanders team that made it to the NFC Championship game. He might not be finished refining his abilities at 34 years old, and could add some extra yards after the catch for the offense this season.
