Commanders confirm death of HC Ron Rivera's mother

The Washington Commanders confirmed on Tuesday that the mother of head coach Ron Rivera died Monday night.

"We are saddened to announce that coach Rivera’s mother, Delores, passed away peacefully yesterday evening with her husband and family members by her side," the Commanders explained in a statement shared by Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "Coach Rivera is grateful he was able to spend two days with her last week. The Snyders and the entire Commanders family extend their heartfelt condolences to coach Rivera and his family.

"The Rivera family would like to say thank you for the many kind thoughts and prayers they have received. Arrangements are pending, and we would ask everyone to please respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time."

Ron Rivera missed two days of in-person work last week for what was referred to at the time as a "personal family matter" regarding his mother. Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio ran practice sessions in Rivera's absence, and Washington went on to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 17-16 this past Sunday to earn its third straight victory and improve to 4-4 on the season.

The Commanders haven't said if Rivera will again step away from the club this week as Washington prepares to host the 6-1 Minnesota Vikings Sunday.
