Commanders could make a sneaky training camp upgrade with one more signing
Adam Peters and Lance Newmark Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

Adam Peters never settles. He's a ruthless roster builder who's taken the Washington Commanders to heights not seen for a generation. The general manager isn't going to change philosophy now.

There is too much at stake for that.

The Commanders have a legitimate chance to go deep into the postseason once again in 2025. They won't be sneaking up on anybody this time around, but the squad looks stronger and deeper than at any stage during the previous campaign. That's only going to serve head coach Dan Quinn well in pursuit of ensuring last season's superb accomplishments weren't just a flash in the pan.

Peters will have a good lay of the land after Washington's offseason program. He'll know the areas of strength. He'll also know where potential problems could emerge and what he can do to fix them.

There is one concern causing fans trepidation more than any other. It won't come as a shock to hear that centers on the team's edge-rushing options, or lack thereof, after almost no real investment in this critical area during Peters' second recruitment period.

Some viable solutions are available that could help immediately. Za'Darius Smith is one. Jadeveon Clowney is another. But there's one option going relatively under the radar who also deserves consideration.

Commanders should see what (if anything) Matt Judon has left in the tank

It wasn't that long ago when Matt Judon was among the league's most feared pass-rushers. He gained 27.5 sacks over two years in 2021 and 2022. The former Grand Valley State standout's powers have waned since, although an injury in 2023 that restricted him to four games didn't help matters.

Judon spent last season with the Atlanta Falcons, gaining 5.5 sacks. It didn't come with another deal, but it's surprising to see the accomplished four-time Pro Bowler still sitting on the market with just a few weeks remaining until training camp.

Perhaps Judon is waiting for the right call to come along. Perhaps the NFL has given up on him entirely. Either way, it wouldn't cost the Commanders much to find out if there is something left in the tank.

On his best day, Judon represents a significant upgrade on anything Washington has in its edge-rushing room right now. Asking him to return to his 2021-2022 form is a major stretch. But if the proven performer can make a difference against the run while also generating pressure consistently when called upon, it's a risk well worth taking.

Whether Peters makes a move remains to be seen. But make no mistake, the front-office leader has to do something.
