Commanders Cut Sutherland; Claimed by AFC Team

A former member of the Washington Commanders has found a new home.

The Houston Texans announced that former Commanders offensive lineman Keaton Sutherland has been claimed off waivers by the team.

Sutherland, a four-year NFL veteran, should help fill the depth issue at the position throughout training camp.

Since being drafted in 2019, Sutherland has made as many team changes as he's played career games, with the Texans being the sixth change of scenery the 26-year-old has gone through over the course of his career. He started with Cincinnati before moving to Miami, back to Cincinnati, to San Francisco, Washington and finally Houston.

Sutherland played four games (one with Bengals, three with Dolphins) during the 2019 season, and one each with the Bengals in 2020 and 2021. However, he did not make an appearance with the Commanders in 2022.

Sutherland is a Texas A&M graduate, having played three seasons in College Station before declaring for the NFL Draft.

The move comes after Texans reserve lineman Scott Quessenberry tore his ACL and MCL, putting him on the sidelines for the rest of the season. Now, Sutherland will compete for a chance to make the Texans' 53-man roster, helping protect Ohio State rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud in Houston this season.
