The Washington Commanders new regime began with a flurry of activity in free agency, and with a new general manager in Adam Peters and head coach in Dan Quinn, the NFC East franchise knew exactly what type of player they were looking for.
It was a mix of veteran players like Bobby Wagner and ones who have been in the system for a few years, like Tyler Biadasz, who was signed to help usher in a new era in Washington and build a stable, winning culture.
Sitting at 8-5, the players brought in during free agency have done their part both on and off the field, and Quinn has revealed they've been driving forces in building the Commanders' new identity.
“Part of them being here, you don't want someone to come into a new spot and have to be somebody different, you wanted to make sure that they could be express exactly who they are," Quinn said. "Austin [Ekeler], Jeremy [Chinn], and Zach [Ertz] those are what I would consider the lead sled dogs, and when you get into December, January football, you lean on players like that, Terry McLaurin, Tyler Biadasz, and a number of different players saying I'll take that step with the guys, and I'll lead the way.”
It has been a positive start to life under the new regime, but it is only early in the process of getting the Commanders back into relevancy and out of the NFL doldrums.
The Commanders have shown good progress, and making the playoffs in Quinn's first season would be a big feather in his cap, and he'll have the players who he helped pick in free agency to thank.
Washington's culture is slowly being built brick by brick, with the "sled dogs" the driving force in making sure the entire locker room is adhering to the standards set and pulling in a positive direction.
