Offseason workouts are the installation and familiarity phase of preparations. It's less intense, allowing players a chance to get back into the groove before the tempo gets ramped up at training camp. That doesn't mean there weren't some positive clues to emerge from the Washington Commanders' standpoint.

One notable insight was revealed by a respected team insider, and it's notable. Ben Standig from The Athletic provided a bullish outlook on Washington's cornerback unit, which he believes could be vastly improved next season if everyone hits their required targets.

Commanders cornerback unit projected to make drastic improvements in 2025

Standig highlighted Marshon Lattimore's return to health as a big reason behind his optimism. The additions of Jonathan Jones and second-round pick Trey Amos should also allow Mike Sainristil to move back inside, which is where his skills are best suited, despite thriving on the boundary during his rookie campaign.

The Commanders’ cornerback room has a chance to be much improved. Injuries have haunted [Marshon] Lattimore, but he arrived healthy for minicamp following needed rest. If available weekly, the four-time Pro Bowler and second-round rookie Trey Amos have potential as a viable tag-team against the NFC East’s star receivers. Ex-Patriot Jonathan Jones brings quality experience to the mix along with [Mike] Sainristil, who may shift back to his natural inside role after impressing in his first season.Ben Standig

This should be the biggest positive imaginable, especially considering the concerns around Washington's pass rush. The cornerback room's hopes largely depend on Lattimore's ability to stay healthy. If the four-time Pro Bowler can do that, it'll completely shift the overall dynamic.

The Commanders devised some useful contingency plans if Lattimore's injury issues continue. Amos made a seamless transition and should carve out a role for himself right out of the gate. Jones brings experience and accomplished production to the table. Sainristil's versatility is an exceptional asset to call upon. There's also Noah Igbinoghene, who finally fulfilled some of his pre-draft promise in 2024.

It's easy to get too carried away at this stage of the offseason. The Commanders have lofty expectations on their shoulders in 2025 after a memorable run to the NFC Championship game. It'll be a tricky challenge to reach similar heights. But if this cornerback group can restrict some prolific passing attacks on the schedule, that's going to make a huge difference.

Of course, it'll take much more to make the defensive improvements needed. Even so, it's been a long time since the Commanders have had genuine optimism like this in their cornerback unit.

Let's hope it's not misplaced.
