Commanders deliver best Sam Cosmi injury update yet (with one major caveat)

Dan Quinn caused a stir during his media availability before the first training camp practice. The head coach revealed that offensive lineman Sam Cosmi's participation in Week 1 against the New York Giants was on the table, which startled the Washington Commanders fan base in the best possible way.

They were expecting Cosmi to be out for much longer. The stud right guard tore his ACL in Washington's divisional round victory over the Detroit Lions. But after hitting all his markers in recent months regarding his rehabilitation, Quinn is cautiously optimistic regarding the former second-round pick's status early in the campaign.

Nothing is set in stone. The Commanders will take every possible precaution with one of their franchise cornerstones. They don't want more complications to arrive by bringing him back too early. Unless there is 100 percent conviction, Cosmi's big return can wait.

Commanders remain hopeful Sam Cosmi can feature early in 2025

Quinn tempered the enthusiasm slightly when asked for further clarification on his initial comments before Day 2 of camp. The coach went through the process ahead of Cosmi, and nothing will be decided for a few weeks, but the glimmer of hope remains nonetheless.

If he came off PUP, then he could be eligible for that. But we won't know that for a few more weeks. If we wait until after and start the season, then you're automatically at four (games). So, we're not going to put any judgment, say he's not going to be ready or is, we're just not sure yet. But he's hit a lot of the markers, and he's close. He's already doing drill work and things, but as far as acclimating to the team (scrimmages), we haven't gotten to that spot yet. I'd say in another month we'll have a good sense.Dan Quinn

This is still a promising prognosis, although with the same uncertain tone attached.

Cosmi is making good progress. That's the most important takeaway from all this. Anyone who thought he'd potentially miss most, if not all, of the 2025 campaign should be breathing a huge sigh of relief.

Getting off the physically unable to perform list is the first objective for Cosmi. If the former second-round pick cannot achieve this feat, then the earliest Washington will see him is Week 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers. If he reaches this significant milestone, the interior force could be ready to suit up right out of the gate.

Time will tell, but Quinn seems extremely satisfied with the way things are unfolding. If the same trend continues, don't count Cosmi out by any stretch of the imagination.
