Commanders fans feast on Cowboys' RB gamble unraveling in real time

The Washington Commanders are looking well beyond the Dallas Cowboys these days after finally surpassing them last season. However, fans are always eager to revel in the misery of their fiercest division rivals.

That didn't change when the Commanders were languishing among the basement dwellers. It won't change now that Washington is among the Super Bowl contenders.

And the ammunition to do so keeps growing. Erratic owner/general manager Jerry Jones might have been more understated than in previous offseasons, but the circus still lingers under the surface.

Micah Parsons' contract extension, or lack thereof, is once again going to cost the Cowboys more for the delay. But there is another bubbling predicament that became glaringly exposed by one former employee that should be extremely well-received by the Commanders.

Commanders fans can only laugh at Cowboys' running back situation

Marcus Mosher from The Landry Hat and Locked on Cowboys spoke with former Cowboys coach Glenn Smith, who's still plugged into the goings on within the organization. He expressed extreme concerns about rookie running back Jaydon Blue, who has not reportedly made the best early impression.

Blue's attitude was called into question. His work ethic was also criticized based on what Smith was hearing. Mosher believes this could be a reason why the former Texas standout wasn't seen working with the first-string offense over Dallas' offseason program.

[Glenn] Smith said that coaches with the Cowboys have expressed that [Jaydon] Blue is “borderline lazy” and that the team is not thrilled with his work habits. That isn’t a great sign for a fifth-round pick who is not only trying to earn a role on the offense, but also make the roster. Blue was a part of OTAs and rookie minicamp, but there haven’t been any reports of him working with the first team yet. And this could explain why.Marcus Mosher via The Landry Hat

The Cowboys took a big risk with their running back options this offseason. They decided not to retain Rico Dowdle despite a 1,000-yard rushing campaign in 2024. They replaced him with Javonte Williams, Miles Sanders, and Blue, who they are hoping could become a dependable committee that complements each other well.

This gamble is already falling by the wayside. It's a damning early assessment of Blue. And make no mistake, it needs to become a wake-up call for the rookie in his quest for a roster spot or rotational role in 2025.

Blue isn't in college anymore. This is the pinnacle of the sport, and it always requires maximum effort. For those looking to make their way, going above and beyond to force the issue is paramount. If Smith's report is accurate, higher standards are not being met.

And if the same trend continues, the Commanders won't be complaining, that's for sure.
