Jerry Jones is probably feeling pretty proud of himself right now. The Dallas Cowboys pulled off a bombshell trade for wide receiver George Pickens, which gives them a potentially dynamic tandem with CeeDee Lamb that the Washington Commanders must counteract effectively.
However, it's also provided the erratic owner/general manager with an awkward new reality that he created himself.
Jones isn't one for shying away from the media. He's outspoken and often makes comments that hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. That could come back to haunt him once again after securing Pickens' services from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Adam Schefter from ESPN brought the situation to the forefront. The senior insider revealed that Pickens, who's entering the final year of his rookie deal, also has the same agent as All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons. That happens to be David Mulugheta, which is a complex scenario for Jones.
Jones revealed that he didn't know Mulugheta's name, and also hinted at breaking NFLPA protocol by negotiating Parsons' deal with the player, cutting out the middleman. This received a fierce response from the Penn State graduate, who stated that no deal would be made without his agent's full involvement.
If Jones wasn't aware of Mulugheta before, he will be soon.
Parsons and Pickens will both seek new contract extensions sooner rather than later. Mulugheta will do right by his clients, but he also won't forget the disrespect shown by Jones. It's another sign of the lingering dysfunction in Dallas, which stems from getting hyped beyond recognition every year before falling way short of expectations.
That's worked in the Commanders' favor lately. They've completely turned the tide under the new regime, pulling well clear of the Cowboys. Just how much Pickens moves the needle is anyone's guess, but Washington has enough quality cornerbacks to offset this threat if everyone meets expectations.
Jones and Mulugheta will end up butting heads at some point. Pickens' value is unclear, especially given the character concerns. That's not the case with Parsons, who probably wants to become the league's highest-paid non-quarterback after talking the NFL by storm.
Oh, to be a fly on the wall when negotiations gather pace. Jones would be wise to eat a large slice of humble pie, even if that's not in his character.
