The Washington Commanders are two weeks into training camp. Joint practices are coming this week, and head coach Dan Quinn leads his team into their first preseason contest on Friday night at the New England Patriots.
It's an exciting and urgent time for players looking to make the squad. Unfortunately, not everyone will be successful in their quest.
Quinn and general manager Adam Peters have a good assessment of the roster by now. They know its strengths and possible weaknesses. There is still time for players to alter perceptions, but the next few days will be telling.
Nothing has been decided as yet. Even so, it doesn't look especially promising for Bobby Price at this juncture.
Competition for places in the cornerback room is fierce. The Commanders are running with Marshon Lattimore, Mike Sainristil, and second-round rookie Trey Amos as their starting trio. Veteran free-agent signing Jonathan Jones and the ascending Noah Igbinoghene have already cemented themselves as core rotational pieces. That makes it difficult for anyone else to force their way into the team's plans.
Much will depend on how many corners the Commanders take. But if it's six as anticipated, that leaves room for one more.
Price joined the Commanders in 2024 but didn't factor much into their plans. The former undrafted free agent out of Norfolk State received a reserve/futures contract from the franchise this offseason, which was a positive development. But it didn't come with any assurances about his roster status.
There is one, maybe two, open spots. Kevon Seymour is another strong candidate. There is also hype growing around undrafted free-agent Car'lin Vigers, who team writer Zach Selby recently highlighted as a major standout from the second week of practices.
Bigger challenges are coming for everybody. The Commanders will be watching developments closely, and they will give everyone a fair shot at staking a final claim in he coming weeks. But it's looking increasingly like that securing a place on the practice squad would be a significant accomplishment for Price.
Urgency has been raised exponentially for Price and others on the fringes. The Commanders are going for a Super Bowl in 2025, and Peters is running the football operation with no sentiment attached whatsoever. If certain standards aren't being met, or others are more deserving, he won't hesitate to make the best decisions for the franchise.
And if Price doesn't keep up, he might even be cut before the 53-man roster deadline.
