This Washington Commanders Free Agency Update is not about a blockbuster signing. It is about what Washington has already done and what those moves suggest.
The front office has quietly changed the cap outlook and reshuffled parts of the roster. Not in a dramatic fashion, but certainly noticeable.
The biggest move was releasing Marshon Lattimore. Clearing $18.5 million is not minor housekeeping. That changes your options considerably on how to invest in your 2026 roster.
Lattimore was brought in to steady the secondary. Instead, Washington chose flexibility. That leaves a corner thinner today than it was two weeks ago. It also gives the team room to act if the right opportunity appears.
Tyler Biadasz being released added another $2.85 million in cap space. That decision feels more financial than anything else as there may be cheaper options in free agency. Or, they could find a center in April’s NFL draft.
Between those two moves alone, Washington opened more than $21 million.
While they made cuts at the corner and center positions, the Commanders reinforced the interior line.
Nick Allegretti (G) signed a one-year extension. Andrew Wylie (G) agreed to two years at $7.5 million. While the offensive line did not live up to standards last year, it has some fans questioning if these two were worth extending. Wylie was “plug and play” and played multiple roles once injuries hit, but he was an average lineman at best. Allegretti had mixed results in 2025. He struggled at times with pass protection but did step and play center when Tyler Biadasz was injured.
While it remains to be seen if Washington will continue to bolster its line in the draft or free agency, the two contract extensions at least give them some depth.
Tress Way also returns on a one-year, $3.03 million deal. No big story here. Just a veteran specialist staying in place while others see turnover. Way has been with the Commanders since 2014 and is the longest tenured player on the roster.
So where does the Commanders’ roster stand now?
They have retained some depth on the offensive line and have a large vacancy to fill at the corner position. There are clearly still several positions that need addressing, including edge rusher, running back, and wide receiver. The question now is how heavily Washington will focus on free agency vs the draft. Several big-name free agents could fill open spots on the team. Rumors have been swirling about cap space being made for a big-name edge rusher like Maxx Crosby. There is even discussion about a hometown veteran returning to the DC area in Wyatt Teller to help further bolster the offensive line. At the running back spot, a player like Rico Dowdle could easily take the starting role. It has also been rumored that Carnell Tate may end up being the No 7 overall pick in the draft for the Commanders.
Regardless of what happens, Commanders GM Adam Peters certainly has a game plan in place. They have more cap flexibility than they did a couple of weeks ago which gives them a lot of opportunity to fill some vacancies. While we may not have access to it, he is showing that he is playing chess right now and is one big move away from making Washington a contender in the NFC East again.
