Commanders HC Dan Quinn admits controversial Jayden Daniels decision was a mistake

If he had a do-over, Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn would've sat quarterback Jayden Daniels during a blowout loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

With the Commanders trailing 38-7 halfway through the fourth quarter, Quinn left Daniels in the game. The QB then suffered a dislocated left elbow after being sacked at Seattle's four-yard line, subsequently exiting in an air cast.

Dan Quinn discusses why he left Jayden Daniels in the game

At the start of his Monday news conference, Quinn addressed his questionable decision. He admitted that it was a mistake to keep Daniels in during the 38-14 loss.

"I know many of you have been asking about the thought process of Jayden being in the game in that situation," the coach told the media. "I get that. I've been thinking about it, honestly, nonstop, too. For me, the answer is 'I missed it.' ... Of course, he could scramble. It's Jayden, it's what he's special at. It's 100% on me."

Quinn taking accountability still won't save the Commanders. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Daniels' elbow injury is expected to sideline him indefinitely, and it remains uncertain whether he'll return this season.

Daniels has already missed three games because of hamstring and knee issues. If he can't return from this latest injury, the 3-6 Commanders can count themselves out of the postseason hunt.

Commanders backup QB Marcus Mariota has filled in for 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year Daniels twice this season and looked spotty. The 2014 Heisman winner has a 1-2 starting record and has tossed the same number of interceptions and touchdown passes (four).

That doesn't bode well for Washington, which is heading into one of its more challenging stretches. According to Tankathon, the Commanders have the 12th-most difficult remaining schedule in the league. It starts in Week 10 when they host the Detroit Lions (5-3) at 4:25 p.m. ET on Fox.

Quinn should be regretting his decision even more. Daniels' injury could ruin Washington's season, which started with high hopes, as the team was coming off an NFC Championship game appearance in 2024.
