Commanders insider finally exposes delusional demand from Terry McLaurin’s agent

The Washington Commanders have held firm in their contract standoff with Terry McLaurin. After some new intel from a respected team insider, it's not hard to see why.

McLaurin hasn't been on the practice field since voluntary workouts. He wants an extension before the final year of his deal, and has done everything possible in an attempt to force the issue. General manager Adam Peters hasn't budged, unwilling to meet the wide receiver's demands in pursuit of an agreement that doesn't jeopardize the team's long-term planning.

It's gone on way longer than anyone expected. And fans are becoming increasingly concerned that it could have severe ramifications on Washington's chances of competing in 2025.

Terry McLaurin reportedly wants top-four receiver money in AAV from Commanders

Nicki Jhabvala from The Athletic shed further light on this situation. The insider reported that not only is McLaurin's agent seeking the same money as D.K. Metcalf, but he wants more per year. That would put him in the top four among all receivers, counting 11.8 percent of Washington's salary-cap in annual average salary along the way.

One person with knowledge of [Terry] McLaurin’s contract negotiations said the veteran receiver has asked for more than DK Metcalf, who signed a four-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this year. If McLaurin is seeking more than Metcalf’s $33 million a year in average annual value, that would put him in the top four among receivers. If he seeks more than the $60 million Metcalf is guaranteed, that would land him in the to p 10 receivers among guaranteed money. If McLaurin is using Metcalf’s deal as a benchmark based on percentage of the team’s cap, the Commanders’ wideout would be asking for more than 11.8 percent of Washington’s cap in average annual value.Nicki Jhabvala

No wonder this has dragged on over the summer.

The asking price from Buddy Baker, McLaurin's under-fre representative, is borderline delusion. That has nothing to do with the pass-catcher's talent, but it's just not a feasible figure for someone who'll be 31 years old when the extension kicks in.

Many wondered if Baker was in over his head with a ruthless negotiator like Peters. This also all but confirms the report that Washington's front-office leader almost cut contract talks off with him completely once the initial figure was outlined.

There is no way the Commanders — or anyone else, for that matter — is going to give McLaurin this money. He's a franchise cornerstone and a phenomenal asset, but it makes no business sense. At all.

And make no mistake, that's exactly how Peters is running the Commanders these days. There is no way he's coughing this up to extend McLaurin, so the player and his agent need to think very long and hard about what comes next.
