Commanders insider gaslights fans with ruthless verdict on rookie’s shaky start

The Washington Commanders couldn't believe their luck when offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. fell to No. 29 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. But according to one team reporter, the rookie edge protector is finding life difficult over the initial exchanges of training camp.

Conerly was a hotly-coveted prospect from the Commanders' perspective. Adam Peters thought he would go a lot higher, and the general manager didn't hesitate to pull the trigger when he was there for the taking.

Washington is taking things slowly with Conerly. They are not handing him anything, and there is some technical refinement needed during his transition from the blindside over to right tackle. He's being integrated into the starting lineup gradually, which is a trend that should ramp up the more comfortable he becomes.

There is a long way to go for Conerly. However, that didn't stop Lynnell Willingham from 106.7 The Fan from pointing out that the former Oregon standout has been underwhelming at camp so far.

The one young pup throughout the first four days of camp that has been underwhelming, is how I would describe it, is Josh Conerly Jr. But one thing I've noticed since watching Josh Conerly in team drills, and it's honestly stunning to me, as it's the opposite of what he was billed as coming out of Oregon, he's got heavy feet. He's not moving tremendously well when it comes to one-on-one pass rush situations. And then, watching him try to get out in space on screens. Do not ring the alarm yet, but I will say this: throughout the first couple of practices, he's been a little underwhelming.Lynnell Willingham

Inevitably, this didn't receive the most positive response from Washington's fan base on social media. Willingham acknowledged it was early in the player's development, but he left no doubt about how many improvements are needed.

Conerly caught the eye during the first padded practice, picking up two blitzes well. He got the start at right tackle, with Andrew Wylie going over to the left as Laremy Tunsil enjoyed the day off. There are some growing pains to navigate, but nobody should have expected anything less.

We live in an instant gratification world. Expectations are high for Conerly, given his draft status and the fact that he can potentially solve a major need immediately. Willingham's opinion suggests it might take a little longer to refine his skills, but the only thoughts that matter are those of the coaches, aiming to take the first-year pro's game up a notch.

It would be disappointing if Conerly wasn't in the starting lineup in Week 1 against the New York Giants. But his progress from here on is something to watch closely.
