It's a big season for Brian Robinson Jr. The Washington Commanders gave the running back a huge vote of confidence entering the final year of his rookie deal. They are expecting him to deliver.

Most fans thought the Commanders would prioritize a new running back capable of becoming a long-term partner for quarterback Jayden Daniels this offseason. Adam Peters strengthened other areas first. He added another, but it didn't come until the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

To say this was a positive for Robinson would be an understatement. Jacory Croskey-Merritt has ambitions to impact the rotation immediately, but the former Alabama standout will lead the charge. And the added incentive of a potential extension next spring should provide the urgency needed to excel.

Commanders insider believes Brian Robinson Jr. can improve again in 2025

John Keim from ESPN is among those who believe Robinson has more to give. The respected insider highlighted Washington's improvements along the offensive line as the primary catalyst behind his optimism. But make no mistake, Croskey-Merritt will be ready to pounce if progress doesn't arrive quickly.

In his first three seasons [Brian] Robinson has rushed for 2,329 yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. The Commanders drafted running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the seventh round. It's way too soon to consider him Robinson's eventual replacement, but regardless, the fourth-year back needs a strong season. He has yet to rush for more than 800 yards in a season. He should have a stronger offensive line to open holes; in the last nine games last season, including the postseason, Robinson had six games when he averaged 1.48 yards or less before first contact. The league average was 2.67 yards.John Keim

There's been a different demeanor around Robinson this offseason. He knows the stakes have been raised. He knows the reward if everything goes well. He also knows the repercussions that come with failure. That's brought about more ruthless aggression, which isn't going unnoticed by the coaching staff.

Everyone knows that Robinson is a hard worker capable of shouldering a heavy burden. It would be surprising if he didn't impress over Washington's upcoming training camp. But in many ways, that's not important.

What's more telling is how he handles the heat in a competitive setting with more pressure on his shoulders than ever before. That will be the difference between getting another deal or being cast aside in favor of someone else.

That's the magnitude of the challenge awaiting Robinson. He's off to a good start, and if the revamped offensive line meets its end of the bargain, there are no more excuses.

It's time to put up or shut up…
