Commanders just got massive NFC East boost without lifting a finger

The Washington Commanders only had one obstacle they couldn't overcome last season. It resided within their division, with the Philadelphia Eagles ending their playoff dreams at the NFC Championship game stage before going on to lift the Super Bowl.

An intriguing development with Washington's bitter rival represents a potential boost to the team's chances moving forward.

The Las Vegas Raiders confirmed the hiring of Anthony Patch as their new senior personnel executive. He was widely regarded as a strong presence within the Eagles' front office, working as Philadelphia's senior director of college scouting and becoming a trusted ally of general manager Howie Roseman over two Super Bowl successes.

Major Eagles' front-office departure could help the Commanders long-term

Looking at how well the Eagles have drafted throughout Patch's time with the franchise, it's evident he was a leading figure behind the scenes. This was recognized by the Raiders, who are looking to make the improvements needed to stabilize the organization and get them more respected within the ultra-competitive AFC West.

Every little helps for the Commanders. It'll be next man up in Philadelphia's front office. And so long as Roseman is calling the shots, they'll always be a force.

What's important for Washington is maintaining its exceptional start to the new regime's tenure, maintaining future flexibility, and finding the right balance between winning now and its long-term strategy. Adam Peters is doing a remarkable job of exactly that.

He's already developed a friendly rivalry with Roseman. They've done business, but only when Washington's front-office leader believes it can benefit the organization. Expect that trend to continue moving forward.

Not having Patch to lean on for advice and counsel represents a blow to the Eagles. How much it'll be felt is anyone's guess, but this is the sort of underrated figure among fans whose role is often integral to successful roster development.

Getting a deserved promotion with the Raiders reveals just how Patch is being perceived in league circles. Roseman knew this day would come at some stage, so he's already formed contingency plans to replace him effectively. Whether the new hire will have a similar impact is up for debate, but the Commanders will be ready to pounce on any weaknesses.

This development will go largely unnoticed. But it could have a positive impact on the Commanders' long-term aspirations when it's all said and done.
