Commanders looking at reserves in preseason start

A first impression is really a false start.

The Washington Commanders open the preseason at the New England Patriots on Friday with rookies and reserves. Washington is largely resting veteran starters against the Patriots.

No quarterback Jayden Daniels debuting after his NFC Rookie of the Year effort that led the Commanders to the NFC Championship. No receiver Terry McLaurin still amid a combination injury/holdout. No linebacker Von Miller leading the pass rush.

Coach Dan Quinn intimated after a joint practice against the Patriots on Wednesday that those who worked extensively in those 11 on 11s wouldn’t play two days later. The coach saw enough from the earlier matchup to avoid risking veterans in a preseason game.

So, what’s left?

Can first-rounder Josh Conerly win the right tackle job? Is cornerback Trey Amos really as good as he’s looked in training camp? Here’s the first look over whether both can start and become key contributors.

The Commanders desperately need to gauge their reserve receivers even if that means catching passes from reserve quarterbacks Josh Johnson and Sam Hartman. With McLauren holding out, Washington wants to see who could pair with Deebo Samuel should injuries hit the unit.

Fourth-round receiver Jaylin Lane and second-year receiver Luke McCaffrey, along with newcomers Michael Gallup and Chris Moore, are vying for three open slots. If none stand out, Washington might be more inclined to finalize an extension deal with McLaurin, who has been its leading receiver for six seasons.

Washington would like another look at rookie running back Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt, who was the talk of camp thanks to a stunning cutback move. Starter Brian Robinson enters his final season after a lackluster three years, and Croskey-Merritt could gain time with a big preseason.

Defensively, the Commanders invested heavily on interior defensive linemen after finishing 30th in run defense last season. If Washington is to catch Philadelphia after losing the NFC East and NFC Championship titles to the Eagles last year, the Commanders need to stop running back Saquon Barkley.

Washington also wants a live-action look at kicker Matt Gay, a six-year veteran with three teams who has been solid in practice. That said, the Commanders went through six kickers last season, so they’re understandably cautious.

It’s not a sexy opener for Washington, but the back end of the 53-man roster gets the spotlight.
