Commanders looking to add young defensive tackles after recent injuries

One of the Washington Commanders’ strengths is their defensive line. They’re already down defensive end Chase Young, who will miss at least four games. Now, Washington has taken a hit or two at defensive tackle.

Commanders head coach Ron Rivera announced defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Phidarian Mathis are getting MRIs on Monday. Rivera added offensive guard Wes Schweitzer is due an MRI as well.

With two defensive tackles potentially down, Rivera said the team is already looking at adding a couple of young defensive tackles, according to ESPN’s John Keim. One potentially for the 53-man roster and another for the practice squad.

Mathis got carted off the field on Washington’s second defensive series with a knee injury. The team is “concerned” for the 6-foot-4, 312-pound rookie. Mathis’s injury appears significant enough for Washington to search the market for a replacement.

Allen, who made the Pro Bowl last season, is a defensive captain and arguably the most consistent defender on the team. He went down late in the game, as the Commanders were looking to close out their victory in the fourth quarter. Allen has a groin injury, and while Rivera doesn’t believe it’s serious, they felt an MRI was necessary.

There are notable defensive tackles on the market, such as veterans Brandon Williams, Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph. However, Rivera specified “young” options, which may indicate they’ll be looking in a different direction. It’s worth noting the team waived Tyler Clark and Justin Hamilton during the final roster cuts.

The Commanders have Daron Payne, who starts next to Allen and Daniel Wise at defensive tackle. They also have David Bada on the practice squad. Even if Allen doesn’t miss any time, Washington may need to add another body to the interior defensive front.
