Commanders lose starting LB during Eagles game to injury

The Washington Commanders are in a dogfight against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1. Unfortunately, the defense may have to continue the contest without one of its starting linebackers due to injury.

Reports indicate that Frankie Luvu is officially questionable to return after sustaining a groin injury, according to Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia. The injury took place during the third quarter of the matchup.

“Washington LB Frankie Luvu (groin) is questionable to return,” Zangaro reported.

The 29-year-old linebacker recorded four tackles and a sack before suffering the injury. Washington will continue evaluating Luvu before determining his status for the remainder of the game. His presence in the front seven will be missed by the Commanders.

Luvu is in the ninth season of his NFL career. This is his third season with the Commanders after previously playing for the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers. He didn’t emerge as a consistent starter until the 2022-23 campaign and has maintained that role ever since.

The former undrafted free agent has been a solid addition to the Commanders’ defense. Frankie Luvu finished last year with 88 combined tackles (42 solo), three sacks, and two forced fumbles. Washington will hope his injury isn’t serious, as he is a key contributor in the linebacking core.

With Luvu on the sideline, Jordan Magee stepped onto the field at weakside linebacker. He’s just one tackle so far in the game. If Frankie Luvu is forced to miss time, then Magee would likely be the starter until further notice. Washington plays the Dallas Cowboys next in Week 2.
