It has been Marcus Mariota who has taken on the QB1 role for the Washington Commanders amid Jayden Daniels’ injury-plagued season. This was the case again on Saturday, as Washington hosted the defending champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, at Northwest Stadium.
Mariota, however, was forced to exit the game in the third quarter due to an injury. The Commanders took to social media to make an announcement about the 32-year-old quarterback shortly after his mid-game departure.
Heading into Saturday’s game, Mariota has made 10 appearances for the Commanders this season, starting in seven of them. During that stretch, the former No. 2 overall pick has registered 132-of-213 completed passes for 1,600 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Mariota, however, was forced to exit the game in the third quarter due to an injury. He headed to the locker room after a tackle from Eagles linebacker Nolan Smith.
Mariota suffered a right hand injury in the second half. As it turns out, however, the former Oregon Ducks star also sustained a knock to the head. The Commanders revealed that there was also some suspicion of a potential concussion.
The good news for Mariota is that the injuries do not seem to be serious. The team announced that he did not suffer a concussion. However, the hand injury has cast doubt on his return.
“QB Marcus Mariota was evaluated for a concussion and was cleared. He is questionable to return with a right hand injury,” the team posted on X.

The Commanders also announced that veteran QB Josh Johnson has taken over for Mariota with the latter's return currently in doubt.
Mariota was seen emerging from the locker room in the fourth quarter. His right hand was covered with a towel as he sat on the bench.
As of writing, the Eagles are up 21-10 with 11:33 remaining in the fourth quarter.
