Commanders must check in after bombshell release sparks unexpected opening

Adam Peters seems pretty happy with his options on the defensive front. That doesn't mean the Washington Commanders should settle in their quest to topple the Philadelphia Eagles and win the NFC in 2025.

And one bombshell development around the NFL warrants a check-in if nothing else.

The Las Vegas Raiders sent shockwaves through the league by releasing stud defensive lineman Christian Wilkins, their big-money signing from the Miami Dolphins in free agency last year. Jaws hit the floor across the league, but there was much more to this story than initially met the eye.

Wilkins is currently dealing with a foot injury. The Raiders wanted him to get another surgery to rectify the issue. But after several other opinions, the lineman declined. Las Vegas promptly cut him, voiding the remaining $35.2 million guaranteed on his deal along the way.

The Raiders cited a "failure to maintain his physical condition to play" as a reason behind their decision. Wilkins acted swiftly, getting the NFLPA to file a grievance against the franchise as the situation threatens to become messy fast.

Commanders should do their due diligence on Christian Wilkins after stunning release

What comes from the dispute is irrelevant to the Commanders or anyone else. Providing the medical assessments are satisfactory, Wilkins instantly becomes the most coveted veteran free-agent on the market, and it's not even close.

Wilkins is among the league's best defensive tackles when fit and firing on all cylinders. He excels against the run, and that didn't change last season in Las Vegas. The former Clemson standout earned an 80.2 run defense grade from Pro Football Focus, ranking third among all qualifying interior defensive linemen. When the situation dictates, he can also generate pressure to further enhance his influence.

There will be a queue of suitors looking to acquire Wilkins. The foot injury is a major red flag, of course, but the player is adamant that the complication doesn't need another surgery. The Raiders held a different opinion, so it'll be interesting to see what conclusions other teams make when they inevitably register an interest.

It wouldn't cost the Commanders anything to find out one way or another. If they aren't entirely convinced by Wilkins' prognosis, that'll be the end of it. But if there is a small chance they can acquire an outstanding performer in his prime, Peters would be foolish not to seriously consider the possibility.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. But some due diligence is required before Peters can make a move.
