Dan Quinn’s name was mentioned in chatter surrounding in-season firings prior to yesterday’s Commanders-Giants tie. His job security has naturally become even more of a talking point given how that game ended.
Washington surrendered a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter to set up overtime. In the extra frame, the Commanders benefitted from a Cam Skattebo fumble and found themselves in position to attempt a game-winning field goal. A baffling final play resulted in quarterback Jayden Daniels getting tackled in bounds, however, and time expired since the team was out of timeouts.
In the wake of yesterday’s events, Quinn once again finds himself as the subject of speculation regarding his future. No dismissal appears to be imminent at this time, though. The Exhibit’s Josina Anderson reports there is not a sense around the league that Quinn will be replaced in the immediate future. Mark Maske of Front Office Sports adds it “seems unlikely” an in-season change is coming at this point. By the end of the campaign, at a minimum, Quinn’s job status will no doubt remain a central talking point.
In 2024, Quinn arrived for his second NFL head coaching gig after a successful final season leading the Cowboys’ defense. Washington went on a surprising run to the NFC title game during Daniels’ rookie campaign, creating expectations for a strong follow-up season. Last year, though, things did not go according to plan as Daniels missed time and the Commanders finished 5-12. Several changes on Quinn’s staff were made, including the replacement of offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt.
Leading up to the current season, it became clear Quinn’s status would be tied to his ability to guide the Commanders to a turnaround. Daniels is back in the fold following another elbow dislocation, but Sunday’s wild finish left Washington with a record of 1-3-1. While there is plenty of room for gains to be made in the NFC East, things have certainly not gone according to plan so far in 2026.
No coaching changes have been made yet this season. At least a few head coaching/coordinator dismissals can nevertheless be expected around the NFL as the campaign unfolds, and attention in Washington’s case will no doubt continue to be focused on Quinn’s ability to rebuild his stock over the coming weeks.
