The Washington Commanders' offseason plans have already gotten off to a flying start with the acquisition of Deebo Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers.
Set to become official at the beginning of the new league year, the Commanders aren't sitting on their hands; they are being proactive.
With Samuel in, other roster needs, such as another depth receiver and pass rusher, will now get the franchise's attention. Armed with ample cap space to make not only smart moves but big, franchise-altering ones, Washington is well and truly in the free agency arms race.
For NFL.com, the needs for Dan Quinn's team are rather clear.
"The Commanders found their franchise quarterback in Jayden Daniels; now it’s time to build around him," NFL.com writes. "Offensively, the Commanders have started a mission to surround Daniels with weapons alongside Terry McLaurin, making a splash with their trade for Deebo Samuel.
"However, there is more work to be done, with reliable TE Zach Ertz and their Nos. 2-4 receivers from 2024 all hitting free agency. With ample cap space, Washington has the financial flexibility to reload, but the front office must make smart moves while aiming to get younger and fitting the roster’s timeline with that of its second-year signal-caller."
Ertz, we think will be returning as he was Jayden Daniels' security blanket last season, and he won't command a sizeable fee either. As for the receivers, Terry McLaurin and Deebo are good starting points, but after those two, the Commanders' strength drops away...and badly.
Olamide Zaccheaus, Dyami Brown, and Jamison Crowder are all free agents, which leaves Luke McCaffrey as the default No. 3 receiver. That isn't what the Commanders want to go into the 2025 season with.
Plus, the offensive line needs to be fortified, too, with left tackle the biggest need, and guard Sam Cosmi, who tore his ACL in the playoffs, is likely to miss part of the season.
So that is Washington's shopping list. ... featuring a handful of priorities. It has the cap space, now comes the time to fix your roster as the NFC East franchise looks to go one better with Daniels in Year 2.
