Commanders place  LB Nate Gerry on IR

After just two weeks, the Nathan Gerry experiment is over for the Washington Commanders this season. The Commanders placed the linebacker on injured reserve Tuesday ahead of the NFL’s deadline for teams to trim their rosters to 80 players.

Gerry signed with the Commanders on Aug. 7 as the team dealt with depth issues at linebacker. He played four seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and spent last season on the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad.

The Commanders signed Gerry over other available veteran options because of his ability to run and provide pass coverage, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

However, Gerry yielded playing time to undrafted rookie Tre Walker and Milo Eifler during the preseason. Last week during practice, Gerry was used at tight end for the scout team.

Now, the Commanders move on from Gerry, leaving them back where they started before signing him. Gerry could reach an injury settlement at some point this season, which would allow him to sign with another team.

Cole Holcomb and an improving Jamin Davis remain cemented as the Commanders’ starting linebackers. Khaleke Hudson and David Mayo are currently listed on the next level of the depth chart. Eifler and Walker will continue to get an extended look heading into the final preseason game Saturday against the Baltimore Ravens.
