Few players have meant more to the Washington Commanders over the past several years than wide receiver Terry McLaurin.

“Scary Terry” has been the definition of consistency since entering the NFL as a third-round pick out of Ohio State in 2019. Despite catching passes from a revolving door of quarterbacks for much of his career, McLaurin established himself as one of the league’s most reliable and respected wideouts. McLaurin averages 14 yards per catch for his career, proving to be a QB’s best friend. He recorded five 1,000-yard seasons in his first six years and scored at least four touchdowns every season before 2025.

Then came last year.

McLaurin is coming off the least productive season of his professional career, one that mirrored the disappointment of the Commanders as a whole. Washington entered 2025 with sky-high expectations after its surprising run to the NFC Championship Game the previous season, only to see those hopes derailed by injuries across the roster, including McLaurin. The team struggled to find consistency on either side of the ball and never resembled the group that had emerged as one of the NFC’s biggest surprises in 2024.

While injuries certainly played a role, McLaurin wasn’t immune to the team’s offensive struggles. That’s why no player on Washington’s roster enters the 2026 season under more pressure.

Commanders Player Under Most Pressure: Terry McLaurin

This isn’t because McLaurin suddenly isn’t a talented receiver. Quite the opposite. His résumé speaks for itself, and one down year doesn’t erase everything he has accomplished. But expectations have changed.

The Commanders are no longer viewed as an up-and-coming team that’s simply happy to compete. They are expected to return to the postseason after last year’s disappointing campaign, and that won’t happen unless their top offensive playmakers perform at a much higher level. That starts with McLaurin.

As the unquestioned leader of Washington’s receiving corps, he’ll be expected to bounce back as the offense’s go-to target. Whether it’s moving the chains on third down, making contested catches in the red zone, or providing explosive plays that flip field position, Scary Terry has to rediscover the form that made him one of the NFL’s most, well … scary wideouts.

Fortunately for Washington, there’s every reason to believe he can. McLaurin is only 30 years old, and he’ll be 31 in September with two more years on his contract after the 2026 season. He enters the first year of his three-year extension.

Elite receivers don’t simply forget how to play football. McLaurin has repeatedly shown he can produce regardless of who’s under center or what’s happening around him. If the Commanders are healthier in 2026, the conditions should be in place for him to return to the level fans have come to expect. Still, that doesn’t lessen the pressure.

Fair or not, franchise players are judged by results. McLaurin is one of the faces of Washington’s offense alongside Jayden Daniels. After the team failed to build on its NFC Championship appearance, Scary Terry will inevitably shoulder a significant portion of the expectations heading into the new season.

The good news for Commanders fans is that McLaurin has built his career on exceeding expectations. He’s overcome questionable quarterback play, constant organizational turnover, and the burden of carrying an offense for years.

If McLaurin returns to his Pro Bowl-caliber form, the Commanders should have every opportunity to contend in the NFC once again. If he doesn’t, Washington could find itself facing another frustrating season and even more questions about whether its championship window is beginning to close.

For a player who has been one of the league’s steadiest performers, 2026 may end up being the most important season of Terry McLaurin’s career.
