Commanders players know time is running out on turning season around

Things are not going well for the Washington Commanders, who have now lost three straight games, topped off with a 28-7 defeat at the hands of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Without quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was inactive due to a hamstring injury, the Commanders have one win in their last five games, with a Seattle Seahawks team that is 5-2 and first in the AFC West next on the schedule. Needing to turn things around quickly, time appears to be running out for the Commanders to make a playoff run.

It is unknown when Daniels will return, but without him, the Commanders are in a tough spot, facing one of the better defenses (305.9 yards/game) and offenses (2,454 yards) in the Seahawks. Sitting third in the NFC East and having an 8 percent chance to make the playoffs after their blowout loss to the Chiefs, time appears to be running out for the Commanders to turn things around.

Veteran tight end Zach Ertz acknowledged as much as the loss to the Chiefs.

"It's just too many highs and lows," Ertz said to Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "Just haven't executed consistently enough in all three phases in a game. Play a half really well and then don't play the second half well. Play a game well in one phase, don't play well in another. I thought we had a really good week of practice, honestly, and I'm confident that if we can continue to practice like we do, that's going to turn. But the clock is ticking, obviously."

Linebacker Bobby Wagner shared Ertz’s sentiment, echoing him by stating the Commanders are “in control of their own destiny.”

"We're in control of our destiny," linebacker Wagner said to Patra. "The plays [that] are happening are things that we can change and plays that we can make. Every game is big. You don't want to dig yourself in a deeper hole."

The Commanders need a win against Seattle and Jayden Daniels back

For the Commanders to turn their season around and get back on track to make the playoffs, they need to get a win against the Seahawks, especially at home, so the hole they must climb out of doesn't get deeper. Getting Daniels back healthy will also help, as he has a chance to play in Week 9. Fox analyst Jay Glazer reported that Daniels will test his hamstring in workouts this week.

Daniels has put together a solid season, throwing for 1,031 yards (28th in the league) with eight touchdowns and only one interception. Daniels has also been a key member of the Commanders' rushing game, running for 211 yards and a touchdown on 44 carries. If all goes well with his workouts and he can return for Sunday’s primetime matchup, the Commanders will have a better shot of turning things around before it's too late.
