Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has missed each of the last two games with a knee sprain, but it sounds like the reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year is hoping to give it a go this Sunday.
Daniels suffered the injury in the Commanders' Week 2 loss to the Packers on Sept. 11, when he took a helmet to the knee at the end of a scramble.
Washington's split its last two games with Marcus Mariota as the starter, however they just haven't looked like the same team without No. 5 behind center.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Jayden gave an update on his status for this weekend. And it appears he's taken another step towards returning to the field when the team travels to LA to take on the Chargers.
During this afternoon's press conference, Daniels shared that he feels "good" being out on the practice field and looks forward playing again very soon.
“I felt good out there and, yeah, that’s the plan,” Daniels said. "... I plan on going out there on Sunday. ... Obviously as a competitor you want to go out there and help your team in any way possible, so being sidelined for this past couple of weeks were super tough. I felt like I could go two weeks ago, but I don't make those calls."
Jayden also said that he's not going to let the injury dissuade him from utilizing his scrambling ability — but he still wants to be smart at the same time.
"Obviously you want to be able to be available for the rest of the games," the QB explained. "But you've got to be smart and that's kind of what we talked about, just living to see another down. But just know that the game is on the line. I'm going to do whatever it takes."
Head coach Dan Quinn also spoke to reporters on Wednesday where he said that he knows what he has to see before he declares that his quarterback is ready.
"That's what I'm looking for," Quinn shared. "He's definitely chomping at the bit to get going. ... Just running the offense, being back to himself."
"The only thing worse than missing games is not taking lessons," the coach continued. "[On] scrambles, when do I get down? When do I go out of bounds? Jayden is still growing. That's the fun and exciting part. He's not anywhere near the top of what he's going to be, so that lights me up."
Daniels put together one of the best rookie seasons we've ever seen from a QB on the way to leading the Commanders within a game of the Super Bowl.
With some of the pieces Washington has added over the past several months it's clear they're looking to win now, and that starts with their Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback being healthy and at his best when his best is needed.
