Commanders Reveal Concern Level on Red Flag for Rookie Corner

If the team that drafts a prospect with a red flag doesn’t view it as a red flag, does it cease to exist?

The Washington Commanders felt fortunate that Mississippi cornerback Trey Amos fell to No. 61, where they made him their second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. But it wasn’t just good fortune that landed Amos in Landover.

For many, Amos was a first-round talent and trending towards a Thursday selection in the NFL Draft. Pre-draft reports, though, dampened his stock with whispers of a back injury – queasy news for any prospect and a reason to be taken off a draft board completely.

Washington, clearly, felt convicted enough to draft Amos. At rookie camp, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn emphasized that he’s not concerned about the red flag for his rookie corner.

“Each team has their own medical report and how it goes,” Quinn said, via The Athletic. “And so, from our club, it was something that we were comfortable with.”

Just as it’s natural for some teams to write off players with similar risks to Amos, other teams are bound to be more aggressive. Thrust into a Super Bowl window, Washington is a few key playmakers away from a championship.

That lends itself to aggressiveness, which makes a Round 1 talent available late in Round 2 too enticing to pass on.

Amos brings with him elite athleticism and imposing physicality from a 6- 1, 195-pound frame. He’s at his best in close quarters at the line of scrimmage, winning with his play strength and twitchiness. Add in a hint of ball skills, and it’s easy to see why the hype reached such heights.

Amos was similarly confident in his medicals.

“Feels good,” he told The Athletic. “I’m out practicing, still competing.”

For whatever it’s worth, Amos’ back didn’t scare him out of testing, nor did it preclude him from testing well. Running a 4.43-second 40-yard dash and posting a 10-6 broad jump, the ailment didn’t dampen his pre-draft circuit.

Washington will bank on its medical staff being right, Amos staying healthy, and a second-round pick returning first-round value. The Commanders are forging an identity around aggressiveness, and it is permeating throughout the organization. Having a superstar quarterback on a rookie deal demands as much.
