ASHBURN, VA — The Washington Commanders’ secondary just got a little thinner. Cornerback Noah Igbinoghene reached an agreement on a one-year deal with the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Saturday. Within hours, the locker room lost another veteran when 39-year-old quarterback Josh Johnson signed with the Cincinnati Bengals, marking his third stint in the Queen City.

Secondary Shakeup in Ashburn

Washington’s depth chart at corner was already a point of contention among fans this spring. Losing Igbinoghene to the Pacific Northwest adds pressure to a unit that struggled with consistency last fall. While Igbinoghene was primarily a depth piece, he stepped up for 10 starts in 2024 and remained a frequent contributor in 2025. He joins a Seattle defense that just smothered New England in Super Bowl LX, looking to fill the void left by Riq Woolen’s departure to Philly.

The Commanders haven’t been silent, however. General Manager Adam Peters already countered the move by bringing in Amik Robertson on a $15 million deal. Still, the loss of Igbinoghene’s speed on special teams will be felt. The front office is clearly betting on younger talent or perhaps a high-round draft pick to shore up the perimeter alongside Emmanuel Forbes Jr.

Meanwhile, the Bengals are bringing back “The Journeyman.” Josh Johnson, who turns 40 in May, will provide veteran insurance for Joe Burrow. For Washington, Johnson was a steady hand in the QB room behind Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota. With Johnson gone, the Commanders may look to a late-round rookie to fill that third-string developmental slot.

“Seattle is a winning culture right now. I’m just ready to get in that building and contribute to another title run. Washington gave me a real shot to play, and I’m thankful for that, but you can’t say no to the champs.”
— Noah Igbinoghene, Cornerback

What’s Next for Washington?

The Commanders still have a handful of names floating in the free-agent ether. Rumors are swirling around the future of Deebo Samuel, who spent 2025 in Washington but remains a high-value target for teams looking for a versatile weapon. Running back Jeremy McNichols also remains unsigned, though the recent signings of Jerome Ford and Rachaad White suggest Washington is comfortable moving in a different direction in the backfield.

Defensively, the Commanders have been aggressive elsewhere, locking up Odafe Oweh to a massive $100 million extension and snagging Charles Omenihu to bolster the pass rush. The strategy is clear: win in the trenches and hope the rebuilt secondary can hold water. Expect Washington to look heavily at defensive backs in next month’s draft to replace the lost depth.
