Commanders sign veteran cornerback for two years

The Washington Commanders are prioritizing the defense early this week. The Commanders used the franchise tag on Daron Payne and then signed the defensive tackle to a four-year deal on Sunday. The Commanders announced on Monday they had made a deal with a veteran cornerback.

According to Tim Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Commanders are extending cornerback Danny Johnson for two years. The contract will be worth up to $7 million. $2.75 million will be guaranteed.

Johnson was an undrafted free agent signed by the Commanders in 2018. He’s been in Washington since. Johnson recorded one interception, nine passes defensed and 29 total tackles last season.

The Commanders are locking in on defense this offseason after it was an elite unit for the team last year. However, the offense couldn’t produce enough points to make the playoffs. We’ll see if Johnson can help the team make the playoffs in 2023.
