The Washington Commanders traveled to Detroit to take on the Lions for Preseason Game 2. But in reality, this was always going to be a mass evaluation. Washington’s defense was able to provide most of the first-half highlights, creating turnovers and consistently finding ways to pressure Detroit’s quarterbacks. Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels played one series, in which the line did not look good.
That said, here are the studs and duds from the first half of the game.
Stud No. 1
On the 2nd play, Amik Robertson made a sack of Lions backup quarterback Josh Dobbs around the left side, unblocked. The result of the play was a sack-fumble that rookie Joshua Josephs recovered for a touchdown. The Lions were called for an illegal procedure penalty on the play, which Washington declined. Robertson set the tone immediately, creating Washington’s first defensive touchdown opportunity just two plays into the game.

Stud No. 2
Josephs recovered the Dobbs fumble for a touchdown. Impressed by how he fights at the line before dropping back into coverage. His combination of speed and awareness is a bit scary, but raw still. Josephs bit on a zone-read that Dobbs took for a long 50-Yard TD later in the first. Together, those two plays were a good snapshot of Josephs right now: disruptive enough to make game-changing plays, but still developing the discipline that comes with experience.
Stud No. 3
Quan Martin made an interception on a pass that Dobbs should never have thrown from back across his body. Martin seems locked in so far this preseason with his second interception in as many games.
Stud No. 4
At the beginning of the second quarter, T. J. Maguranyanga had a sack of Luke Altmyer that led to a nine-yard loss for Detroit. This is huge for TJ, who is trying to make the roster.
Stud No. 5
Javontae Jean-Baptiste sacked Altmyer with nine minutes left in the second. This is exactly the type of play he needed to keep his name fresh in the discussion.
Dud No. 1
Center Julian Good-Jones gave up a sack right through the A-gap on play one. This is bad for Good-Jones at a moment when the spotlight is shining the brightest.
Dud No. 2
John Bates gave up a sack on play-action. He just could not hold his block. Bates recently returned from a hamstring injury, but not being able to hold blocks isn't normally something that feels normal to write next to his name.

Dud No. 3
The offensive line was a disappointment overall, but Nicholas Petit-Frere gave up a sack of Sam Hartman, who fumbled. If simply losing the rep wasn't bad enough, Hartman losing the ball was the kicker. Thankfully, the half was almost over.

The team had issues stopping the run and protecting the quarterback, with the starting offense playing only three snaps. It was not an impressive half offensively. The defense was able to keep things level with two turnovers, including one that resulted in a touchdown.
