Opportunity is knocking for those who impress at training camp. The Washington Commanders are giving everyone a fair opportunity to flourish, which could see the team's roster plans change before the all-important final cuts arrive.
And the Commanders have subtly spotlighted one camp standout that not many fans saw coming.
Places are at a premium, at least from the outside looking in. At the same time, head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters won't hesitate to throw a few curveballs into the mix if they believe it's the right thing to take the franchise forward.
It might not amount to anything, but Kazmeir Allen's starring role at training camp so far is raising eyebrows if nothing else.
Allen was an undrafted free agent brought into the fold in 2023. He didn't do enough to make the squad despite displaying promise, but the former UCLA standout remained part of the practice squad setup.
His early development focused on making him a multi-purpose weapon. Allen started his college career as a running back before transitioning to wide receiver. There was also a lot to like about his potential in the return game, which is something the current regime wanted to see in greater detail, albeit on the practice squad once again, in 2024.
The Commanders were impressed enough to give Allen another reserve/futures contract this offseason. Making the roster remains a tall order, but there is some extra urgency attached to his performance levels that are enhancing his chances.
Allen made a highlight reel play with the pads on. He created separation on a deep passing route, expertly brought in the target, and showcased his explosive elusiveness to wrong-foot the defender and reach the end zone.

This is the best way to get noticed. Just where Allen fits into Kliff Kingsbury's plans remains to be seen, but his versatility could be of use if others fluff their lines.
The Commanders need to see what they truly have in Allen. That means making him a focal point over the preseason, using him as a running back, wide receiver, and kick returner. That'll be the best measuring stick to go off, but a place on the practice squad once again seems like the most realistic outcome.
However, if injury strikes, the Commanders have a dynamic player waiting in the wings. And based on his training camp exploits so far, Allen looks more than capable of seizing the chance if it arrives.
