Commanders' Thursday Injury Report: Defense is trending towards being without key players for Week 10 matchup against Lions

The Washington Commanders are getting ready to host the Detroit Lions at home for a Week 10 matchup, and a rematch from the playoffs where the Commanders shocked the world.

This is a completely different game for a lot of reasons, but the main factor is injuries, and this is a completely different team than who the Commanders had in the playoffs. Quarterback Jayden Daniels is out after dislocating his elbow, and Marcus Mariota is starting again. Terry McLaurin is also expected to be out for a while, and there's no timetable for his return.

Those are just two of a long list of starters out, and the Commanders are just trying to have a full roster at this point. There are still a handful of starters worth watching, and a couple of them are dealing with injuries, especially on defense.

Injury Observations

  • The Commanders have three young players who need to be playing and developing for the rest of the season to show they're part of the future, but Quan Martin, Trey Amos, and Tyler Owens are all dealing with injuries, and would be huge players to miss out on Sunday. Amos has been the best player in the secondary all season.
  • Martin has had a step back this season and also had injuries last season. He's one of the main players who need to continue to produce for the team as a starter. Darnell Savage would likely start next to Jeremy Reaves if Martin is out.
  • Johnny Newton is another young player we've barely heard about this season, and it would be huge if he could have a big showing in the remainder of the season. He's been dealing with this injury for a few weeks and played through it.
  • Laremy Tunsil played through his hamstring injury last week after leaving the game against the Kansas City Chiefs early. Those injuries linger, but he was a full participant after not practicing on Wednesday.
