Commanders to hire Super Bowl-tested 49ers assistant for GM role

The Washington Commanders have their new general manager, and he is bringing plenty of Super Bowl experience with him. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Commanders are hiring San Francisco 49ers assistant GM Adam Peters for their top front office role.

Peters has Super Bowl-winning experience in both the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos front offices and spent the past three seasons as John Lynch's assistant helping to build one of the league's best teams with the 49ers.

Peters was previously a member of the Broncos' personnel department and director of college scouting, acquiring 27 players who were a part of their Super Bowl-winning team during the 2015 season. He was a scouting assistant and led pro scouting duties with the Patriots between the 2003 and 2008 seasons when they won two Super Bowls.

His experience in helping to build Super Bowl contenders in New England, Denver and San Francisco made him one of the most sought-after candidates on the GM market and was also considered a front-runner for the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders jobs.

It is an early win this offseason for the Commanders and their new ownership group led by Josh Harris. Washington has been mired in mediocrity for decades, winning just three playoff games since its last Super Bowl win during the 1991 season. The franchise also made just seven playoff appearances in those 32 seasons.

After winning just four games in 2023 the Commanders' roster needs a total overhaul, and Peters is going to have plenty of opportunity to get that started in a big way. The Commanders have the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and should be in a prime position to land one of the top quarterbacks in the class (either USC's Caleb Williams or North Carolina's Drake Maye). Washington has nine picks overall, including two picks in each of the second and third rounds. That gives them five of the top 100 picks in the draft, while also possessing the most salary cap space in the NFL entering the offseason. That is going to give Peters a lot of flexibility — and opportunities for creativity — as he attempts to rebuild the Commanders organization.
