Commanders To Waive K Jake Moody

Moody was non-tendered as a restricted free agent but wound up re-signing in Washington this spring. That came after he made six appearances with the Commanders in 2025. Today’s decision will free up $1.58MM in cap space while generating a dead money charge of $125K. Moody is now headed to waivers; provided he goes unclaimed, he will become a free agent.

Throughout training camp, Moody had been competing with Drew Stevens. A clear leader emerged over time, as noted by ESPN’s John Keim. Moody’s struggles of late in particular will leave him in search of a new gig. For Stevens – an undrafted free agent – meanwhile, the kicking job is his barring an outside addition on Washington’s part.

Moody enjoyed a strong rookie season with the 49ers in 2023 but things have not gone according to plan since then. The former third-rounder saw his accuracy drop considerably during his second year, and 2025 resulted in time spent on three different teams. Shortly after being cut by San Francisco, Moody joined the Bears and made a pair of appearances with them. That was followed by a Commanders stint during which he went 10-for-11 on field goal attempts as well as extra point kicks.

Teams could be interested based on that level of regular-season success, although Moody’s career inconsistency and poor run in training camp will no doubt hinder his market. It will be interesting to see if the 26-year-old manages to line up a new opportunity prior to Week 1 or if he remains unsigned through the start of the season. In any event, Stevens will aim to provide Washington with stability at the kicking spot, something which has proven to be elusive for an extended period.
