It's now official: The Washington Commanders will rock an alternate uniform during the 2025 NFL season and it's a nod to the franchise's past.
The Commanders are calling the look the Super Bowl Era Uniform, as it closely resembles the team's old uniform and is more of a throwback than something new. Though a "W" replaces the old Redskins logo, pretty much everything else is the old look.
The video announcement of the uniform was released on social media with the caption: "History doesn't fade. . . It fuels the future."
The look features the championship burgundy and gold fans have come to love over the years. The burgundy jersey numbers are outlined with a gold border and the helmet has the classic white and gold stripes right down the middle.
The Commanders will wear it the Super Bowl Era uniform in three games during the 2025 NFL season:
In 2025, the Super Bowl Era uniform won't be much more than an alternate look used a few times during the regular season. But beyond this year, there's a strong possibility it becomes the team's standard uniform.
That's at least according to The Team 980 AM's radio host Kevin Sheehan, who has been on top of the uniform story since last October. Leading up to the Commanders' uniform reveal, here's what Sheehan said about the alternate look:
"I have it on good authority that they are going to go back to something resembling the old uniforms sans the more recent Redskins logo [. . .] It would be a rollout with [alternative uniform] opportunities in 2025 [. . .] In these alt opportunities this year I would imagine that at least in a couple of these we're gonna have a uniform that looks like the old uniform."
"And then eventually, the plan would be to go back to something resembling the old uniform sans the last logo in the 2026 season."
Controversies aside, the franchise has obviously gone through some identity trouble over the last few years. Going back to what is essentially the team's previous uniform sans the Redskins logo appears to be a move most of the fanbase will love.
