There is a stark difference for the Washington Commanders in their 2026 offseason program compared to that of 2025. Namely, wide receiver Terry McLaurin is present this year after missing some offseason activities last year amid a holdout.
McLaurin recently explained why getting back on the field with Jayden Daniels.
McLaurin admitted that missing time with a young quarterback entering his second NFL season in 2025 was far from ideal, emphasizing that the connection between the two has become a critical part of Washington's offense. Now that he and Daniels are back working together, McLaurin believes the pair has already begun ironing out the details that will help make the Commanders' passing attack even sharper when training camp begins.
“Missing that time, I think with a young quarterback is extremely important because although I was going into year seven, Jayden was going into year two, and our connection is extremely important to build during this time, and that's why we wanted to jump on it as early as possible," McLaurin said, via David Harrison of WUSA9. And it's a learning process. Now that that's out of the way, we've been able to hit the ground running, and it's allowed us to really work out a lot of early kinks, and we're connecting on a lot of plays early. We've talked through a lot of things. He's texting me on the side. We're just communicating all the time. So when we get to camp, we're expecting it to look a lot more crisp.”
McLaurin’s comments demonstrate that he understands the franchise belongs to Daniels now more than any other player on the team. His first thought was not about missing OTA reps affecting his production, but about the significance of a second year for the young quarterback. McLaurin knows the team’s fate in 2026 will heavily rest on Daniels’ progression as a quarterback and his ability to take the next step.
Establishing rapport, chemistry and timing with your franchise quarterback doesn't happen at the snap of your fingers during training camp, and his tone shows he’s trying to fast track that relationship as much as possible heading into Year 3.
The Commanders receiver stated that communication is now a day to day process and that these offseason conversations could prove to be just as important as specific on-field work the duo does.
