Commanders WR Terry McLaurin responds to vow from new OC David Blough

Shortly after the Washington Commanders promoted assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough to the role of offensive coordinator this past winter, he suggested that he'd like wide receiver Terry McLaurin to get at least 10 targets per game

On Tuesday, McLaurin was given an opportunity to respond to those comments.

Terry McLaurin loves David Blough's plan

"I love that," McLaurin said about Blough's plan, per Kevin Patra of the NFL's website. "You know, he told me that way back in February. He texted me that. Him and I have a really good relationship. He's been a man of his word. My job is to prove that each and every day, when we're having workouts, to be the leader, to be someone who you can count on to be on the field and make plays. That's all I've been asking for. That's all I want. So, to win games and have a big part of that, so I was definitely smiling when I saw that come across (my) phone."

The Commanders and then-offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury parted ways after the club finished the 2025 regular season with a record of 5-12. While some were stunned by the move because injuries limited quarterback Jayden Daniels to just seven starts before he was shut down due to an elbow issue, a January report hinted that Commanders head coach Dan Quinn and Kingsbury "disagreed on what style of offense to run moving forward...with Quinn wanting to run the ball more to control the clock and help the defense."

Terry McLaurin shares what's different about the Washington offense under David Blough

Meanwhile, quad issues limited McLaurin to just 10 games last season. He is now looking forward to being moved around in an attempt to have more home-run opportunities created for him under Blough.

"I think that's cool when you have an offense that has multiple looks and formations that can make things look the same and marry together," McLaurin said about aspects of Blough's offense. "It provides opportunities for everybody because the defense has to worry about you being in the receiver position: one, two and three on the left or the right. You know what I mean? There's just so many different combinations we can do now that I feel like it frees up a lot of people."

The perception exists that Quinn is on the hot seat, so he likely needs the Blough experiment to pay off in a big way later this year. Blough doing whatever he can to make life easier for McLaurin on gamedays should only benefit Quinn and the Commanders as long as the 30-year-old can stay healthy for at least the bulk of the season.
