Competition between A.J. Brown, Christian Gonzalez nears boiling point

The ongoing battle between New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown and cornerback Christian Gonzalez intensified during Thursday’s training camp practice, reaching a point where teammates intervened.

The two Pro Bowl players have sought each other out throughout camp, exchanging words and competing fiercely. On Day 11 in full pads, Gonzalez got the better of Brown in one-on-one work, including a pass breakup near the end zone. That sparked trash talk and finger-pointing as they moved to the next period.

This was the play that Gonzalez pointed at Brown afterward, and it looked to get a little heated as the team moved on to the next period of practice. Nothing crazy, just competition.

Receiver Kayshon Boutte stepped in to separate them.

“I was just trying to pull A.J. out to go on to the next,” Boutte said. “I heard him say something about ‘You a grown man.’ So I just got in there before it got too far.”

Gonzalez downplayed any ill will toward Brown, who was acquired via trade in June.

“It’s good on good,” he said, via NESN. “He’s a No. 1 receiver in this league going up against a No. 1 corner. That’s how it’s gonna go. It’s football at the end of the day. There’s never no disrespect or anything. We’re just battling and getting each other better.”

Competitive fire has elevated intensity as both stars push each other ahead of the regular season.
