Concerning Titans draft trend should scare the team off of a new trade-back scenario
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee Titans are in an intriguing position with the 2024 NFL Draft on the horizon. The Titans currently hold the No. 7 overall pick, but there is always a possibility that the team moves back and collects more picks via trade.

With the talent in this class it's no surprise that teams across the league will have interest in moving up the draft board. The Las Vegas Raiders have already reached out to the Titans, but a new potential trade partner has just emerged.

The Buffalo Bills sent shockwaves around the NFL as the team traded Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. Diggs has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of his last four seasons, but he's not the only significant departure on Buffalo's offense.

Gabe Davis recently signed a three-year deal worth $39 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Josh Allen will be without the team's top two receivers, which makes the Bills the perfect candidate to jump into the top 10 for a game-changing pass catcher.

The problem with this particular scenario is that the Bills' first-round pick is slotted at No. 28 overall. So in order for the Titans to consider making that deal Buffalo would likely have to part ways with a first-round pick in 2024 and 2025 along with a second-round pick as well as a fourth-round selection.

Titans fans don't need to be reminded about their team's history when picking in the 20s, but here is a list of the last five players Tennessee drafted at No. 20 overall or later in the first round.

  • Caleb Farley (22nd overall in 2021)
  • Isaiah Wilson (29th overall in 2020)
  • Rashaan Evans (22nd overall in 2018)
  • Kendall Wright (20th overall in 2012)
  • Kenny Britt (30th overall in 2009)

None of those players earned a second contract in Tennessee. Yuck.

While the Titans have been unlucky in the backend of the first round lately, it hasn't always been bad. Fans will remember Chris Johnson who was selected 24th overall in 2008 and Keith Bulluck taken 30th overall in 2000.

The projected draft haul would be nice for a team that needs help at multiple positions, but there is no guarantee that the player the Titans draft at No. 28 will move the needle.

If the Titans do happen to trade back with Buffalo they would then likely be choosing between either the sixth-best wide receiver or seventh-best offensive tackle. For those keeping score at home, Treylon Burks was the sixth receiver drafted in 2022.

This doesn't mean the Titans shouldn't entertain a trade-back scenario, but dropping 21 spots in the first round is a massive drop-off in talent. If the Titans do decide to make a move back they should look to do so with the Raiders or Saints who are set to pick at 13th and 14th overall respectively.
