As the Dallas Cowboys touched down in Oxnard for Brian Schottenheimer's first training camp as head coach, at the annual state of the union address (or "Jerry Jones' Glory Hole Press Conference,'' as our Mike Fisher likes to call it), it wasn't football that was the topic of conversation early, it was contracts.
But hey, we knew that was going to be the case, didn't we?
Micah Parsons looms as the big domino to fall with things still going at a snail's pace for reasons we don't understand. Even Jerry Jones stated he isn't concerned in the slightest about how things are moving, which will no doubt irk Cowboy Nation.
But it is worth noting that training camp is generally a place where the Cowboys do contracts and get them sorted out, which means there is hope for Micah to get his record-setting deal.
"Well, obviously when you're together here at camp, it makes for a good environment to get some things done before the season starts,” Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said. “At the end of the day, I think it does take two.
"This is a great environment to look at not just Micah's situation, but all situations in terms of players that are probably going to be up for contract next year. So, we're always looking for those opportunities. And certainly the players, we have players that are interested in that, and we'll be working on that while we're here at camp.”
Hmm, ok Stephen, color us intruiged.
It isn't just Micah that is at the forefront of the mind with extensions.
DaRon Bland, Brandon Aubrey, Jake Ferguson, and Tyler Smith are all in line for potential extensions next offseason, with Bland, Aubrey, and Smith expected to get top-of-the-market deals.
So, things will be getting very expensive very soon for the Cowboys, and we can chuck in Micah, too.
Training camp is upon us folks, and so too are the contract sagas. ... and the hints from the Joneses that maybe some work is about to get done in this "good environment.''
