Controversial Analyst’s IMPOSSIBLE Raiders Ownership Prediction
NFL: Las Vegas Raiders at New England Patriots Brian Fluharty-Imagn ImagesBrian Fluharty-Imagn Images

The Las Vegas Raiders are 1-0, joining the rest of the AFC West in leapfrogging the Kansas City Chiefs, who emerged from Week 1 as the lone 0-1 unit. While skies haven’t been this sunny in quite some time, potential storm clouds are brewing. At least, that’s what one NFL talking head claims to see.

Speaking on “Pro Football Talk,” NFL pundit Mike Florio poked fun at the Raiders defeating the Patriots while Tom Brady’s new statue sat outside Gillette. The joke being, of course, that Brady is the part-owner of an opposing franchise. By beating Robert Kraft, Brady might have had the biggest one-two punch of Week 1. However, he isn’t going to stop there, Florio predicted.

“He [Tom Brady] will eventually finagle ownership of that team [the Raiders]. Mark. My. Words,” Florio said matter-of-factly.

Florio seemed quite confident in his prediction, but even for the most accomplished quarterback in NFL history, there is a limit to how far determination can take one off the football field.

Tom Brady Has Limits, Even As A Minority Raiders Owner

Put simply, the potential for such a covert change of ownership is all but impossible. Mark Davis owns the Raiders, and while he reportedly did all he could to cut Brady a below-market deal to get him with the franchise (Washington Post via Reuters), he has no reason to give up control.

First, there is the question of money. Owning an NFL franchise is one of the most proven and lucrative investments one can make. Mark Davis has no reason to give up the golden goose, even to the most accomplished quarterback of all-time, no matter how many times Brady says “please.”

Davis might be tempted to help him out, but it would effectively mean the end of his own time with the organization, which would leave him out in the cold and separated from Brady.

Even if Brady could entice Davis to sell him the franchise, Brady doesn’t have the assets on hand to purchase the $7.7 billion team (Forbes). The quarterback notoriously took less money in exchange for greater players to help him win Super Bowls, but even if he had milked the NFL for every dime, nickel, and penny, he would still be billions short.

The only path to have any change of ownership would be to go the Peyton Manning route when he explored purchasing the Denver Broncos. Manning was interested in being part of a group of buyers to purchase the team (CBS Sports), which is the route Brady would need to take.

As it stands, Brady is worth only $300 million per Celebrity Net Worth, which means he would need to find a group willing to take him in. The group would then collectively make a move to buy the team and install Brady as the de facto owner. However, going this route would hardly be the “finagle” Florio predicted.

One can dream up a scenario in which Tom Brady pulls off a scheme akin to “House of Cards,” in which Brady goes behind Davis’s back to pull the rug out from under him, but the quarterback most likely lacks the required masterclass-level business acumen to even attempt such a maneuver.

Most dangerously, if the public were to find out about the attempt, it would significantly hurt his reputation, potentially to the point of putting his FOX career on ice, as it would brand him untrustworthy. Plus, it might open the door to Davis finding a way to remove Brady from the Raiders entirely.

As it stands, while Brady could one day get into a bidding war for the Raiders, the idea of him winning the franchise from the shadows is not just unlikely, but impossible.
