Veterans are starting to report for training camp, which only means one thing: the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles are back.
There is definitely plenty of intrigue with storylines to monitor for the team and players to watch, but one is being pointed out as one every Eagles fan should watch. The Athletic's Brooks Kubena already has one in mind that should be watched in training camp: Cooper DeJean
"DC Vic Fangio’s experimentation with perhaps his best defensive back will pick up in earnest when training camp begins. While Fangio disclosed his plan to keep DeJean at nickel and test DeJean out at cornerback or safety in base packages, OTAs ended without any public viewing of DeJean at safety. The Eagles secondary underwent yet another significant transition in the offseason. There are position battles at both cornerback and safety. By keeping an eye on how DeJean is deployed, you’ll partly see where Fangio believes the secondary’s strengths and weaknesses are."
Last season was a memorable one for DeJean, who exploded onto the scene during the second half of the season. He finished with 51 tackles, six pass deflections, three tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, one quarterback hit, and a half sack in 16 games. Everyone knows what he did in the Super Bowl to take over 100% of the momentum with his pick-six on Patrick Mahomes.
Entering Year 2 in Fangio's defense, DeJean will have a different role in the unit, as he will be doing more than just being a slot corner. He's also on the outside with Quinyon Mitchell and is at safety.
His play at safety will be particularly interesting since there is a massive position battle going on between Sydney Brown, Andrew Mukuba, and Tristin McCollum. Depending on how often they use DeJean in that safety package, it could reveal Fangio's card on how he feels about the three safeties fighting for a starting job.
It could also inform fans about the outside cornerback situation, as the Eagles look to replace Darius Slay with either Kelee Ringo or Adoree' Jackson. Is Fangio okay with DeJean playing more outside while rookie Mac McWilliams or Parry Nickerson potentially play in the slot?
There are numerous interesting scenarios that could unfold with DeJean, but that's the beauty of having someone as versatile as DeJean. Fangio loves guys like that, as it brings a different element to the defense to have a jack-of-all-trades.
Regardless of where DeJean lines up on the field, the Eagles have a great weapon in the backfield that can only enhance the team's defensive unit.
