Could Broncos replace Nathaniel Hackett with Ejiro Evero if they lose to Jaguars?

Denver Broncos first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett dropped five of his first seven games and may be on the figurative hot seat heading into this Sunday's matchup against the 2-5 Jacksonville Jaguars.

Well-known Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright tweeted Monday that the franchise's new ownership is "embarrassed" by the current state of the team and that "anything is possible" regarding Hackett's status if the Broncos don't start winning soon.

Meanwhile, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio named Denver defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero as a potential in-season replacement for Hackett who could take over as soon as after the team's game versus Jacksonville and during its bye week.

"With Evero possibly in line to get head-coaching consideration elsewhere for 2023, why not give him an eight-game on-the-job audition?" Florio wondered. "If they’re already thinking about parting ways with Hackett after the season, why not do it as the bye week arrives and nine games remain to be played?"

Hackett previously served as Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator, and it was widely thought in January that Denver hired him to woo Green Bay quarterback and four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers remained with the Packers, though, and the Broncos ultimately landed Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks.

Wilson struggled across his first six games with Denver and then missed Sunday's loss to the New York Jets because of a hamstring injury. Per ESPN stats, the 33-year-old began Monday 25th among eligible quarterbacks with an 83.4 passer rating, 28th with a 35.2 total QBR, and 31st with a 58.6% completion percentage on the campaign. He has five touchdown passes and three interceptions.

According to Josh Alper of PFT, Hackett didn't say Monday if Wilson or backup Brett Rypien will start against the Jaguars.
