Shedeur Sanders' NFL career hasn't gotten off to the start his fans thought it would.
He only got on the field because of injuries, and while he held onto the starting spot to close out the season, there are no guarantees he'll start in year two.
Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken has had nothing but praise for Sanders and for Deshaun Watson, but he has yet to decide who'll be the starter.
Considering that, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler revealed that the Browns might consider trading him if he doesn't win the QB1 job.
“The Shedeur Sanders factor where, if he doesn’t get the job, is he the right backup for your team? I don’t know the answer to that,” Fowler said on ESPN Cleveland. “Maybe he is and he is a young player, he has got some time. I still go back to, he was a fifth-round pick. It’s hard to expect to be the starter every year when you are a fifth-round pick. You’ve got to earn it, you’re not promised anything.”
The Browns may not want to deal with the distraction of having Sanders as their backup, especially after experiencing that last year.
Watson is in the final year of his contract, and it is unlikely his time in Cleveland will be extended. The fact that Sanders couldn't beat Watson for the job might speak volumes about his potential as a franchise quarterback.
However, teams are always looking for reclamation projects at the position, and he has the work ethic, youth and popularity to potentially get another chance elsewhere.
The Browns' quarterback of the future might not be on their current roster, and with two first-round picks in 2027, they're in a perfect spot to find one in a deep class.
So, if they don't think Sanders can be that guy and can get decent value in return for him, moving him would certainly make sense for all parties.
