Could Browns Sign Aaron Rodgers?

The Cleveland Browns are stuck trying to make the best of a bad situation under center, and that could take them to the open market after the 2024 season.

Incumbent starter Deshaun Watson will likely spend the 2025 season on the PUP List as he rehabs from Achilles surgery. While a rookie quarterback in April’s NFL Draft remains a distinct possibility, buying time with a bridge quarterback until the Watson era officially ends could be Cleveland’s quickest path back to mild contention.

One name that could enter that conversation is New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers’ struggles were epitomized on Sunday when he posted a 44.0 passer rating in a 40-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills. And as New York descends to irrelevance once again, it could be looking for a reset.

If the Jets choose to cut Rodgers, and he still intends to play, the Browns could find themselves first (alone?) in line for his services, at least according to Ian Rapoport.

“I would expect some competition though, wouldn't be surprised if it's veteran competition,” Rapoport said on NFL GameDay Morning. “Aaron Rodgers, if he's out of the Jets, would be one potential option. Kirk Cousins, the other.”

The Jets’ problems run much deeper than Rodgers, who’s posted a 4-12 record in 2024. While his production is modest – 3,623 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions – one could reasonably suggest there’s enough left in the tank to be a startable passer in his age-42 season.

It might not be pretty, and it certainly won’t be without its fair share of headaches. But with Watson sidelined, the organization pressed to do something to win football games, and with the possibility of both Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward being off the clock by Cleveland’s pick, the two could find each other in free agency.

Few teams are in position to hand the keys to an aging Rodgers, fresh off ending the tenures of the head coach and general manager who brought them in. The Browns, however, are unique in their desperation, especially if they bide time until Watson can be released.

Like most bridge quarterbacks, it wouldn’t be likely to find success. But in terms of winning games in 2025, it’s better than outright tanking, and an administration with waning job security could feel pressured to put pen to paper on another questionable quarterback.

Fans will justifiably root for the best pick possible come April to mitigate that possibility.
