Could Giants make surprising Tommy DeVito call amid development of Jaxson Dart?

While the New York Giants are hoping that rookie Jaxson Dart will eventually become the club's long-term starting quarterback, some fans understandably assumed the Giants will plan to use a practice-squad spot to retain 2023 undrafted fan-favorite Tommy DeVito following the preseason.

For a piece published on Tuesday, Giants reporter Dan Duggan of The Athletic hinted that the club could be ready to part ways with DeVito as long as Dart, starter Russell Wilson and backup Jameis Winston all remain healthy through the final days of August.

"Barring injury, there’s no path to a spot on the active roster for DeVito," Duggan wrote. "It will be interesting to see if any team deems DeVito worthy of an active roster spot if the Giants cut him. There isn’t even a real need for the Giants to use a practice-squad spot on DeVito since they’ll have three capable quarterbacks on their active roster. But they could try to stash the 26-year-old if they believe he provides value behind the scenes and as a backup option to Dart in the future."

DeVito remains the only quarterback on New York's roster who has taken an in-game snap while playing under head coach Brian Daboll. The New Jersey native won three of his first four career starts as a rookie, but DeVito more recently failed to impress across a pair of starts last season. Over those two outings, he completed 31 of 44 total pass attempts for 257 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Some reporters and analysts previously mentioned that the Giants could hold onto DeVito as their QB3 and make Winston available to the New Orleans Saints. Winston played for the Saints from 2020 through the 2023 season, but Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated suggested on Monday that New Orleans wants rookie Tyler Shough to serve as its Week 1 starter come September.

Daboll should want to give Dart plenty of playing time in the first halves of exhibition contests, beginning with the preseason opener at the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 9. It sounds like DeVito will have to look like a revelation against the Bills, New York Jets (Aug. 16) and New England Patriots (Aug. 21) to have any chance of potentially leapfrogging Winston on the depth chart this summer.
