Could OC Mike Kafka call offensive plays for Giants this season?

The New York Giants went through their latest organizational reset following the 2021 NFL season and ultimately hired former Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen as their new general manager.

Schoen then selected former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll as his head coach, and it's been thought for months that Daboll would be the team's offensive play-caller this fall as he and his staff look to get the best out of quarterback Daniel Jones during what may prove to be Jones' last campaign with the team.

It appears that may not necessarily be the case.

Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper noted that Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka told reporters Thursday he's been calling plays during practice sessions. Kafka added that Daboll and company haven't yet announced who will hold what roles on the sidelines when preseason contests get underway in August.

Kafka previously served as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs and, per Alper, has thus far never called plays in a meaningful NFL game during his career. Daboll may be using the spring and summer months to experiment with different ideas, but the jobs of those on his staff could be something to keep an eye on down the road and during training camp.
