ESPN's Peter Schrager dropped somewhat of a bombshell when he reported Tuesday morning that teams "pursuing Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter, Penn State pass-rusher Abdul Carter or Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty" are "looking to trade up to the No. 2 or No. 3 pick" of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Considering the Tennessee Titans are expected to make Miami quarterback Cam Ward the draft's first choice, one may think the New England Patriots could field offers for the No. 4 pick. According to Mark Daniels of MassLive, New England had "not received much trade interest" for the fourth overall selection as of late Tuesday morning.
Per Daniels, sources previously shared "that there was doubt that the Patriots would be able to trade down because this draft class lacks star power outside of Carter and Hunter." The Browns are expected to take Hunter at No. 2 if they stay put, while the Giants (No. 3) continue to be heavily linked with Carter.
"The Patriots are not locked into staying and picking at No. 4," Daniels added. "This draft isn’t filled with elite talent, but rather it’s deep with quality players and starting-caliber prospects. A trade-down would mean the Patriots get more draft assets and still likely come away with a starter."
Throughout April, analysts and reporters have predicted that New England will spend the draft's fourth pick on either LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell or Missouri offensive tackle Armand Membou. That said, the Patriots are in the second year of a needed roster rebuild and could use additional assets to bolster both their offense and defense.
NFL Media's Lance Zierlein has Jeanty ranked as the draft's highest-graded overall prospect. It's widely believed the Las Vegas Raiders want to take Jeanty at pick No. 6, but ESPN's Michael DiRocco suggested on Tuesday that the Jacksonville Jaguars could select Jeanty over Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham with the fifth choice.
It's unclear if the Raiders like Jeanty enough to trade with the Patriots for the right to draft the ball-carrier. Completing such a transaction would allow New England to pick up an extra selection or two and grab either Campbell or Membou at No. 6.
As of late Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Campbell as the betting favorite at -380 odds to be the draft's fourth selection.
