Could Raiders hold onto Davante Adams through trade deadline?

Former New York Jets quarterback and current NFL analyst Boomer Esiason said during Wednesday's edition of the WFAN morning show that he "wouldn't be surprised" if want-away Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams is a member of the Jets "next week."

It appears Adams may want to wait before he starts packing his bags for a move to the Big Apple, though.

"The Raiders are in no rush to trade Adams," team insider Tashan Reed of The Athletic wrote in a piece published Wednesday afternoon. "If they don’t receive an offer they like, they’ll have no issue waiting until the Nov. 5 trade deadline to make a decision. If there’s no good offer on the table at that point, they could even drag things out into the offseason."

ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported that the Raiders "would 'consider' trading Adams for a package that would include a second-round draft pick and additional compensation," adding that the Jets and New Orleans Saints are high on Adams' "wish list of places to land if he's traded."

Adams and Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers were teammates with the Green Bay Packers from 2014 through the 2021 season and previously had New Orleans' Derek Carr as his QB1 at Fresno State and for a single campaign with the Raiders.

Reed notes that any team that acquires Adams before the trade deadline "would likely need to restructure his contract" because of the massive base salaries attached to his current deal. That means that should Adams not want to play for an interested organization lacking the needed space to absorb his future cap hits, he theoretically could refuse to rework his contract.

Reed's update suggests things between Adams and the Raiders could get ugly. Adams apparently wants out as soon as possible, but Las Vegas can wait to see if either the Jets or Saints become desperate enough to go all-in on landing the 31-year-old.

The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported on Wednesday that Rodgers "has been pushing the (Jets') front office to get his former teammate and good friend to New York before the trade deadline." Rodgers seemingly is running the show in Florham Park, so one would think that Jets general manager Joe Douglas might just give the Raiders what they want for Adams so the veteran signal-caller can have his favorite weapon available for the team's Week 6 game versus the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 14.
